some amazing young men...

My Nephew Ben is home from college for the Holidays for the next couple of weeks. When he was home for Thanksgiving I didn't get to see him at all so I decided to make some time for him this visit. I went over to Tina's for dinner on Sunday and Ben asked if he could come stay with me for a couple of days so he could reconnect with some of his friends that still live in Mesquite, of course I said yes. What happens when you go off to school, Ben found out, is that a lot of your "friends" move on...so poor Ben found himself sitting around my house with his old Aunt bored out of his mind! Tonight I asked Ben if he wanted to go out for a small dinner and a movie, he said yes, more out of boredom than interest I am sure but he said yes all the same. We decided to go to Denny's for dinner, it was not the best choice. The service was awful, and slow....so slow that we missed our movie. So we just sat and talked. Ben is going to school to become a musical engineer, during the time he has been in Florida he has virtually been homeless. I thought this entire time that he was living on campus, turns out that there was no on campus housing available and he was not able to find a job until just a couple of months ago! His job doesn't pay enough to afford an apartment on his own and try as may he has not been able to find a roommate. So, some nights he spends on friends couches, some nights under a bridge. The thing that impressed me, was that through all of this Ben has continued to go to classes and maintain decent grades! He told me tonight that when he made the choice to go to school he knew in his heart that nothing was going to stop him from completing his goal. I have a roof over my head and a man that takes care of me and I have a hard time going to school every day and keeping my grades up. I have a new found respect for this incredible young man. I know he will do great things with his life and that he knows that life is a journey not a destination.
I also find myself truly awed by Sean these days. His boys are coming home tomorrow, and he has worked so hard to get everything ready. He put the crib together Yesterday, helped Eden get all the baby stuff ready, He is spending the night at the hospital with Eden and the kids tonight as sort of a trial run for the home coming. Tomorrow before bringing the kids home he is going to a CPR class so he will be prepared if God forbid anything happens. My boy is a young man, and a father and I am so proud of him and how he has handled all of the stress. I know he is scared but he is not showing any fear. He is being strong for Eden and meeting every new challenge head on and I admire him for that. I guess I did an okay job, because I have a pretty terrific kid.

Both of these young men are amazing. You and Tina have every right to be proud of them. I am sure that Ben and Sean will both do some great things. My love to both of them.
